Northampton, MA (March 7, 2024) – The ArtSalon is a dynamic social evening of engaging presentations by established and emerging artists in the Pioneer Valley. The ArtSalon provides an opportunity for artists and designers of all mediums to present their work and ideas. Come meet and join the artists, creators, critics, and collectors in a friendly, social gathering of conversations about the arts in our community. Presenting artists are Magda Bermudez, Todd Colby, Christa Donner, and Julie Rivera.

This month’s ArtSalon is hosted with support from Smith Arts and a grant from the Northampton Arts Council and will be held at the Smith College Carroll Room located in the Campus Center.

The evening begins at 6:00pm and presentations start at 6:30pm.

Magdalena Bermudez (she/they) is a filmmaker and educator whose practice examines the entangled relations between people, animals, and technologies through essayistic film and video works. Magda received a BA from Hampshire College and an MFA in Cinematic Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her work has screened internationally at various film festivals, including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Antimatter [Media Art], Athens International Film + Video Festival, BIDEODROMO International Experimental Film and Video Festival, Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival, Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, Black Maria Film Festival, West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival, Tranås at the Fringe, and The Festival of (In)appropriation. She is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Film and Video at Hampshire College.

Todd Colby is a visual artist and poet who works in Northampton, Massachusetts and Brooklyn, New York. Colby has recently presented work at Platform Project Space, Andrew Edlin Gallery, Tanya Grunert Gallery, Legion Arts, White Columns Artist Registry, and The Picture Room. He has given readings at DIA Art Foundation, MoMA PS1, The Public Theater, Hudson Opera House, The Poetry Project, and The Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. He is the author of seven books of poetry, most recently, It’s Okay to See Ghosts Now (Spiral Editions, 2023).

Christa Donner is an interdisciplinary artist who investigates the human/animal body as a site for conflict and adaptation, from the internal activities of the microbiome to the creative potentials of care work and multispecies community. Her practice moves between drawing and sound, small-press zines and social exchange. In 2012 Donner founded the creative platform Cultural ReProducers to foster skillsharing and visibility for parents in the arts. Her work is exhibited widely, including projects for the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art (Singapore), the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin), Bankart NYK (Yokohama), the Museum Bellerive (Zurich), the Centro Columbo Americano (Medellin), and throughout the United States.

Julie Lapping Rivera is a printmaker and collage artist, currently teaching woodcut at Smith College and at Zea Mays Printmaking. She began her career as a teaching artist in NYC with the Studio In a School Association, Museum of Modern Art, and Lincoln Center Institute. She is a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship recipient in Drawing, and has received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.  In 2022 Julie was awarded a guest artist residency fellowship to Scoula Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, Italy. representing the Boston Printmakers. In April, 2024, her woodcut and poetry series “Look Again: Portraits of Daring Women” will open at the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, MA.
